Evangelism is the spreading of the gospel to others to share the Word of God with them. This often involves using the teachings and messages from the Bible to lead others to the faith. Using specific passages and quotes from the Bible in this way is also referred to as biblical evangelism.
However, there’s one important question that might not have a clear answer. Did Jesus teach evangelism? In this article, we’ll look further into the relationship between Jesus and evangelism.
What Did Jesus Think About Evangelism?
The relationship between Jesus and evangelism may not be clear at first. If evangelism is the act of sharing the gospel with others, then how does that relate to what Jesus did during His life? When looking at Jesus’ life, His actions, how He treated others, and His commitment to spreading the gospel, we actually see that Jesus is the greatest evangelist of all.
We also learn many principles of evangelism from Jesus, like the importance of helping others, being respectful and compassionate, presenting the gospel in ways that are easy to understand, working together with others to spread the gospel, and more.
Here are some examples of Jesus doing evangelism in the Bible:
Mark 16:15-16 — “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’”
Matthew 28:18-20 — “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”
Acts 2:42-47 — “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe[d] came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
John 15:1-11 — “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
These are only a few of the passages that illustrate how Jesus taught evangelism. He also shared the gospel with his apostles and commanded them to continue spreading the Word of God, even after Jesus was gone.
