Evangelism is the spreading of Jesus’ message—also known as the gospel—to others, with the goal of bringing them to faith in Jesus Christ. This message is life-saving and can help those who hear it and take action receive eternal life.
Throughout the Bible, there are many references to planting seeds and harvesting. In Mark 4:30-32, we are told about the Parable of the Mustard Seed: “Again he said, ‘What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.’”
Most of these messages—like the Parable of the Mustard Seed—talk about the importance of bringing people to faith in Christ. Like the gospel of the growing seed, we must help the kingdom of God to grow. They instruct us to evangelize so that we may reach unbelievers and help them foster a relationship with Jesus. The gospel is like a seed and you have to sow it. It can be sown into people's hearts, much like a farmer plants a seed in the ground. Once the seed is planted, it can sprout into something wonderful—love for Christ.
The goal of planting seeds of the gospel is to create opportunities for people to hear and respond to the message of the gospel. You can evangelize in many different ways, including personal witness, Bible studies, sermons, gospel presentations, and street evangelism using gospel tracts. Planting seeds of the gospel requires a willingness to share one's faith and to engage in conversations about spiritual matters with others.
This isn’t always an easy task, as many unbelievers do not care to pay attention to the message you share. The process of planting seeds of the gospel requires patience, persistence, and faithfulness. Just as a farmer must wait for the seed to grow and mature, so must we be patient and persistent in our efforts to share the gospel.
One key to successful evangelism is to meet people where they are. This may involve adapting how you spread the gospel to fit the needs, culture, context, and interests of the people you are attempting to reach. This is also similar to the planting of seeds, as seeds must adapt to the soil that they are planted in, how much water and sunlight they receive, and more.
Ultimately, the success of the seeds of the gospel that we plant is not in our hands, but in the hands of the Holy Spirit. We cannot force anyone to believe in Christ. Our role is simply to plant the seeds, and to trust in God's promise to help them grow (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
