What Does Evangelism Training Look Like?

Evangelism involves spreading Jesus’ message—the gospel—to unbelievers in an effort to help them achieve salvation. But how does one become an evangelist? Is there any training involved? In this article, we’ll explore what evangelism training may look like and the steps you can take to become an evangelist.

How Do You Train To Become an Evangelist?

There are a wide variety of courses out there—particularly online—that offer evangelism training. These courses are usually made up of reading materials, workbooks, lectures, and even workshops sometimes. These courses are very good at telling you what to do, but practicing in real life is the best way to learn.

No matter what, an evangelist has one job above all else: spread the gospel. While specific training may minutely help you to become a more effective evangelist, all you truly need to evangelize is love in your heart, determination, and knowledge of the Bible. This means that anyone can technically become an evangelist. However, here are some “training” steps that will help you along the way:

  • Study the Bible - The Bible is the primary tool for every evangelist. You can’t be very good at spreading the Word of God if you aren’t familiar with it. The Bible instructs us to evangelize and that is why we must also use it as a resource to do so. Familiarizing yourself with the Bible and making it a central part of your life is an essential aspect of being an evangelist.

  • Pray - Another part of becoming an evangelist involves praying to God and building a relationship with Him. This relationship should be at the center of your life, and you should seek to do His will throughout your everyday life. Praying to Him will keep your relationship strong and give you guidance during your evangelism efforts.

  • Work on Your People Skills - A big part of evangelizing is engaging with other people and attempting to start spiritual conversations with them. Many unbelievers will simply ignore you, but working on your people skills can help to become more approachable and inviting to others. This can allow you to connect with them and open the door to more important conversations, like the life-saving message of Jesus.

  • Use Gospel Tracts - A final part of “training” to become an evangelist involves using every resource available to aid in your crucial mission. One of the best resources—particularly for street evangelists—are gospel tracts. Gospel tracts are powerful visual tools that allow you to draw people’s attention and spread the gospel in many different languages.
